NAFDAC COMMENCES ENFORCEMENT OF BAN OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGE IN SMALL VOLUMES
NAFDAC is intensifying enforcement efforts to implement the ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small-volume containers of 200ml and below. This decision, based on recommendations from various stakeholders, aims to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children and drivers, from the harmful effects of alcohol consumption.
Effective January 31 2024, there are no alcoholic beverages in these categories registered by NAFDAC. Manufacturers were given a transition period to phase out existing stock, which has now ended. Starting February 1, 2024, nationwide enforcement actions have been initiated, targeting both producers and distributors found in violation of the ban.
NAFDAC warns of strict consequences for non-compliance, including potential prosecution. The Agency urges holders of banned alcoholic beverages and associated packaging materials to surrender them for destruction to prevent legal action. This move underscores NAFDAC’s commitment to public health and the regulation of alcohol consumption, especially among vulnerable segments of the Nigerian population.
To me the intention of this NAFDAC decision is fantastic but in reality with Nigeria context it is defective.
Do you support outright ban of sale of alcohol in public places first and vigorously enforce it?
Do you support the suggestion that all alcohol should be sold only in bars and hotels whom shall obtain permit or license from NAFDAC for such?
Some have argued that these Sachet acholic drinks which have become a source of inspiration to low esteem individuals of pushing forward for survival should not be banned.
