2023 WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY CELEBRATION (WFSD)

In celebration of the Annual World Food Safety Day (WFSD), the Environmental/ Occupational Health and Safety Directorate of Lagos State Ministry of Health in partnership with the Lagos State Safety Commission of Lagos State Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Relations marked the 2023 World Food Safety Day with the theme “Food Standards Saves Lives” at Mile 12 International Market which happen to be the largest market of fresh farm produce in Sub-Sahara Africa

As a relevant stakeholder in the food industry, a Food Safety Advocates and acclaimed Food Evangelist, I was invited to Mile 12 International Market to address the executive team, market men and women, food handlers, retailers, vendors and customers of this largest market of fresh farm produce in Sub-Sahara Africa; Shukura Yam Sellers Association; Orisunbare Fruits and Vegetables Market at Ikosi-Isheri on ‘FOOD SAFETY: ROLE OF FOOD HANDLERS AND MARKETERS’.

The attentive food handlers and marketers were happy and agreed to share best practices on Good and Personal Hygiene learn at this short talk that will reduce the incidence of food-borne illness in the market and at home. They were dissuaded by various speakers from the government agencies present ( DG/CEO of Lagos State Safety Commission and Director of Environmental/ Occupational Health and Safety) and their leaders on the use of ‘carbide’ a dangerous chemical to hasten the ripening of fruits. They agree that ‘Food safety is everyone’s responsibility’ and want government bodies to play their part in the provision of basic infrastructures in the market.
