IS NIGERIA RICE SUFFICIENCY PRODUCTION PLAN A PIPE DREAM?
NIGERIA’S DREAM OF BECOMING SELF-SUFFICIENT IN RICE PRODUCTION BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR
It is obvious that Nigerians’ appetite for rice shows no sign of slowing down. Chief Audu Ogbeh, the Minister in charge of Agriculture and Natural Resources in Nigeria recently said that Nigeria will become self-sufficient in Rice production by the end of 2017?
However, critics of government policy not only point to a lack of spending on agriculture, but also to an under-investment in the entire value-chain for rice, from field to cooking pot. Some states that were carefully selected under the Federal Government of Nigeria collaborative efforts with World Bank are being supported under Fadama III Additional Financing.
And you will recall that Lagos State Government of Nigeria enter into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kebbi State government that resulted in the popular LAKE RICE.
1-Do you agree with the general notion that Nigeria’s dream of becoming self-sufficient in Rice production before the end of this year, 2017 is a Pipe dream?
2-And what will you suggest that the various tiers of government should do to make this dream a reality
