NAFDAC to come down hard on fast food outlets, bakeries!
In a renewed effort to sanitize the Quick Service (fast foods) Restaurants, Bakeries, Flour marketers, etc, in the country, Foodpreneur News, who had been at the fore fronts of the awareness campaign on the importance of food safety education, hygiene and food security, learnt from a reliable source that the nation highest regulatory body, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) may have concluded plan to begin another nation-wide crackdown on fast-food restaurants, bakeries and flour marketers in a renewed bid to check the resurgence of unwholesome practices and sale of substandard products.
In the recent past, enforcement operations carried out by NAFDAC has led to the closure of some big names in the industry. Our team of correspondents who had been investigating complaints received from consumers can authoritatively confirm that some flour marketers are in possession of the banned lethal substance, Potassium bromate and some bakery operators are still using the cancer-inducing substance which they joyfully referred to as ‘tablets’. These set of bakeries reverted to the use of Potassium bromate to enhance the size and appearance of their bread.
It is worrisome to note that some restaurants are still in the habit of selling stale and unwholesome foods and bakery products to unsuspecting members of the public. While many do not have water treatment plants installed in their outlets. Some are using archaic and malfunctioning water treatment plant. Also noticeable are untreated water tanks used by most restaurant and bakeries that had been infested by algae. The general hygiene of the kitchen and personnel were poor and unsatisfactory.
Do you believe that some even went to the extent of using unethical means by employing the service of cats for de-ratization process i.e. using cat to chase out rat from the outlets instead of using qualified and approved fumigators, thereby exposing unsuspecting consumers to transferable diseases such as toxoplasmosis from animals to man. Toxoplasmosis is a disease caused by toxoplasmas, transmitted chiefly through undercooked meat, or in soil or cat feces. Symptoms generally pass unremarked in adults, but infection can be dangerous to unborn children.
