NAFDAC @ it Again! Guinness fined N1billion
It is no longer news that the National Agency for Food Drug and Administration and Control (NAFDAC) sent out its team to conduct a routine check on the premises of a foremost brewing company in Nigeria, Guinness Nigeria Plc., the maker of the regular Stout Beer, Malta, Origin, etc on 5th November, 2015.
The report submitted by the team to their enforcement and regulation unit revealed that the company has not adhered strictly to the recommended Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) procedures. The shocking report showed:
• The unhygienic storage of their raw materials
• The raw materials used in the factories were exposed to rodents
• Re-invalidating of the expired raw materials without approval
• Maintaining poor documentation
NAFDAC subsequently fined Guinness Nigeria Plc an administrative charge of one billion (N1bn) naira with a 2-weeks ultimatum
Issues arising from
• What is NAFDAC trying to achieve with the fine?
• Has NAFDAC quantify the health implications of the usage of revalidated expired raw materials in production of their various products?
• What happen to the expired raw materials that were revalidated without approval?
• Can the final consumers of Stout, Malta, Origin, etc sue Guinness Nigeria Plc for using expired raw material?
• What is the role of Consumer Protection Council (CPC) on the right of consumers?
All these and many other questions are seriously begging for answers by the consumers from NAFDAC, before it is swept under the carpet like that of Chocolate Royale.
