As the Founder and Chief Executive of FOODDOTCOMACADEMY,a food entrepreneurship training centre, I was invited to be part of the annual Business of Education Summit, 2022 held at Shell Hall, Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos by Edusko Africa with the theme, “WHOLE-CHILD EDUCATION”. In attendance at the event were hundreds of top school administrators, school owners, and heads of schools, educators, education entrepreneurs and education stakeholders
All the speakers unanimously agreed that whole-child education should be a shared responsibility and everyone should be involved including parents, teachers, students, administrators and the community. They affirmed that training and retraining of educators to become better equipped to provide well-rounded education for learners is key to sustaining Whole- Child Education. And it was suggested that a school curriculum should be all-encompassing and everyone involved in school administration should create a pool of teachers who are able to identify students’ talents and stimulate a passion for what suits them most. The gathering equally clamored for individual contribution and de-emphasizes much reliance on government but for us to take up the responsibility of making the desired change happen bearing in mind that government starts from each of us.
Also, parents were advised to help nurture their kids’ talents and not just focus on academic success. We are all encouraged to open our mind and never to be afraid to try something different when it comes to our children education and development. In addition, the gatherings proposed that teachers’ welfare should be a priority because teachers can’t give what they don’t have and the educators need to know that they have the support of the community so as to do their jobs better.
Furthermore schools were advised to create a child-tailored curriculum that embraces inclusion and differentiation in order to improve school outcomes. This will ultimately improve students’ communication skills and boost their confidence levels including creating project-based learning and holding student-led conferences.
The Idea of whole-child education is to agree that education goes beyond listening in the classroom as it also involves learning practical skills so that learners can succeed in the real world beyond the four walls of the classroom. The need for schools to be a place where learners can run to and feel safe was also emphasize by the various speakers at the events and school owners were encouraged to employ teachers that can contribute to the rounded education of students, and that the welfare of such teachers should be well taken care of.
All the participants congratulated and thanked the Edusko team on a very successful and impactful event. The gatherings advocated for collaborative efforts in providing well-rounded education.
