Bread Distribution in Nigeria-Foodpreneur News Perspectives

Bread is a staple food on the table of most Nigerians and it is not an exclusive right of only the rich but other average Nigerians as well. As affordable and accessible this is, the mode of distribution of these freshly baked bread is appaling by both the licensed, registered and unregistered bread producers, bakery owners and operators. The bread is mostly distributed in an unhygienic and undignified manner.
Initially the regulatory authority concerned were up and doing but has relaxed their oversight functions in recent times and we believed strongly that this is one of the reason why those involved are having their ways.
Foodpreneur News team had been monitoring the activities of these bread producers and their so-called mega distributors. We observed that these people employ the services of ‘untrained’ cab drivers, bicycle(okada), tricycle (marwa) riders to distribute these bread very early in the morning.
These products are poorly arranged at times at the back seat of the cabs. As if this is not enough, we saw some drivers that put these bread in the boot of vehicles. Most of the time, in the boot that are dirty with motor jacks, spilled engine oil, grease, extra tyres, etc. Where are we going in these country? The few retailers just put a loosely held foam, soaked in vegetable oil with uncleaned hands to re-arrange these bread on racks, trays, etc for onwarddistribution to final consumers.

What is your take on this? How did we get ourselves to these level and what could be done to reduce the incidence of food-borne illness via this unhygienic mode of bread distribution in Nigeria?
